Landscape that shapes the shot
The South Course occupies coastal mesa ground above the Pacific. Canyon edges, dense rough and ocean weather frame broad-looking shots that become much tighter at their preferred landing zones.

Course overview
The South Course occupies coastal mesa ground above the Pacific. Canyon edges, dense rough and ocean weather frame broad-looking shots that become much tighter at their preferred landing zones.
William P. Bell designed the course and his son William F. Bell completed it before the 1957 opening. Rees Jones later restored the South Course, moving greens and adding tees to strengthen its championship test.
Plan the second shot from the tee. Favoring the useful side of a fairway can matter more than chasing maximum carry, while elevated and exposed approaches demand an honest wind adjustment.
What defines the round
Real elevation and cliff-edge context shape the look, wind and consequence of the South Course routing.
Long par fours and guarded greens ask for sustained ball striking rather than a single heroic shot.
The City of San Diego operates Torrey Pines as a municipal venue with a record of major and tour competition.
